Aboriginal consultation

Aboriginal Kids

The Minister for Community Services held two consultations with Aboriginal stakeholders during 2009.

The first consultation on 9 February 2009 focused on discussion of the NSW Government's response to the Special Commission of Inquiry into Child Protection Services in NSW. The report of the Special Commission highlighted the huge and unacceptable over-representation of Aboriginal children and young people in the child protection and juvenile justice systems and proposed specific actions to reverse these trends.

The second forum on 6 August 2009 focused on discussion of implementation of Keep Them Safe: A shared approach to child wellbeing, released by the NSW Government in March 2009. The forum discussed implementation of specific Aboriginal actions as well as the importance of ensuring all Keep Them Safe actions improved outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people. Possible approaches to implementing the Government's commitment to develop a Keep Them Safe Aboriginal Impact Statement were also discussed.

The Aboriginal consultation has supplemented the work of the Advisory Groups established by the Minister for Community Services on release of the report of the Special Commission.
